That Friday eveningâ¦
âI canât believe this is happening!â Didi shrieked, clutching at her throat. âItâs going to happen! Iâm here!â
I laughed at her enthusiasm. Didiâs joy was infectious and had been on the ride down from Parfait to Miami this afternoon. Sheâd been so excitable at work, a few of the customers had asked me if Iâd allowed her to tuck into the cakes. But it wasnât sugar driving Didi.
It was her love for a particular K-Pop groupâSITS, or Stars in the Sky, I was toldâthat had brought her to the brink of passing out from sheer anticipation several times today.
We stood in front of our seats in the grand stadium, watching the lights show and the performers that had come on to introduce the main event. Didi wore a shirt with the handsome stars of the group on the front, a bright pink skirt, and had pink streaks in her hair.
A lot of the concertgoers wore similar getups, all of them holding banners or flashing lights bearing the groupâs name.
Iâd chosen a black, knee-length dress because it was both casual and comfortable, and a little dressy. I still stood out like a sore thumb without all the extra glitz, glamor, and bright colors.
âThank you so much for bringing me!â Didi threw her arms around me.
âYouâre welcome,â I said. âItâs a pleasure. I havenât been to a concert like this before.â The last big event Iâd gone to was an opera performance. Iâd enjoyed it, but Damon had left halfway through to take a business call. The jury was out on whether that had been a business call or heâd gone to spend time with his mistress.
Not that it mattered now.
I was ready for a new experience, even if it was so loud in here I had to shout to be heard.
A popping hiss rang out and sparklers erupted on the side of the stage.
âAnd now, the one, the only⦠Stars in the Sky!â an announcer called off-stage.
The crowd went wild. Didi screamed like she was being attacked, tears dripping down her cheeks, her hands clasped together as she jumped up and down.
The group of young men strode onto the stage and took positions, each one striking a pose that spoke of grace and power.
âI love you, Ji-hoon!â Didi screeched.
I inserted a finger into my ear and wiggled it around, wincing.
The crowd roared ever louder while they waited for the first song to begin, the entire stadium shaking from the noise, the stomping of feet, the clapping of hands.
âSITS! SITS! SITS!â the crowd chanted, starting a slow clap that reverberated through the space and thrummed in my chest.
Heavens, they must be good if people love them this much.
The song started, and my jaw dropped. The young men danced and sang. And there were no mistakes. Their moves were slick, the song pleasant, preppy, and upbeat, and I tapped my foot in time to the music.
Half the joy of the show was watching Didiâs reactions to each new song or dance, as well as the interactions of the crowd members around us.
